what are the riser rings for?

I have a 20" Longworth System that has been working great for 5 -7 years. Recently, the black and red plates no longer glide smoothly. What can I use to lubricate? If I need to take them apart, is the screw in the center right tight and left loose or is it reverse threads?
You can take it apart and clean it as needed. The threads are standard right hand and mineral oil is best for cleaning but just wiping it out will probably take care of your problem without any cleaning products.
